Kit Barrett
When Kit Barrett performs, his level of storytelling and diction create very accessible and memorable songs.
Although I’ve admittedly heard his songs repeatedly, I have always found it very easy to recall each word.
In June 2021, Kit Barrett recorded his first full-band single with Troubadour Distillery Cork. Sundown Comedown was later released on all major streaming platforms on Saturday, 31st July.
Having developed the arrangement over two years as part of Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa’s Music, Management and Sound course, Kit created a very clear vision of what the recording should be.
This allowed us to blaze through the recording process – with seven musicians contributing across ten or so hours:
Kit Barrett (vocals, acoustic guitar), James Christopher (electric guitar), Robyn Miller (bass), Peter O’Sullivan (drums), Pepa Fletcher White (keys, vocals), Katie Kavanagh (vocals), Ellie Ahern (vocals), and Orna O’Reilly (vocals).
Pierce Dorney, James Christopher, and I contributed as sound engineers, while Pierce completed the finishing touches with mixing and mastering.
Amazingly, all of the above were classmates attending Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa as first years in 2019 – except second-year student James Christopher.
We were all introduced to the song at the same time. We watched it evolve and helped contribute to Kit’s vision in different ways.
The arrangement is now full and rich – a big leap from the Comedown Sundown I first heard acoustically two years ago. It hasn’t lost any of its original magic; rather, it amplifies Kit’s unique vocal and guitar work.
Sundown Comedown helped define our time in CSN, and to see it being executed so brilliantly makes it all the more special.
